The Adviser to the Minister of Health and Medical Education, Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a letter to the Ambassador of India conveyed the appreciation of the Iranian Government for the decision to extend the services of the Indian Medical Hospital at Bam till March 31, 2004.  The Government of Iran has identified only a few hospitals for an extended stay at Bam.

The Government of India had set up a fully equipped multi-specialty field hospital at Bam immediately after the devastating earthquake to provide medical assistance to the victims.  The hospital is manned by 12 Indian Army doctors and 51 Nursing officers and paramedical staff.  It is equipped with two Operation Theatres, state of art X-ray machine, facilities for Lab tests, etc.  It has separate male, female and pediatric wards.

The team has till now treated 27,612 outpatients and 1,097 inpatients. In addition 2,515 surgeries have been performed including 140 major orthopedic and general surgeries. The state of art X-ray machine has benefited 634 patients and 6,631lab investigations and 383 ECGs have been recorded. The landmark surgeries performed till now include an earthquake victim suffering from fracture of Tibia and Fibula, operated with a close ante grade nailing of Tibia under radiological control. An Iranian policeman preferred the Indian hospital for his Appendicitis operation having so much faith in its capability. Many cases of pediatric emergencies with respiratory distress and adults with acute myocardial infarction have been treated with latest therapy.

The Indian hospital provides 24 hr OPD and emergency services.  All in-patients are being provided with winter clothing and food as per local taste and customs. The needy people at Bam are being provided with blankets and ambulance services. The facilities of X ray, laboratory, two operation theatres and wards were well appreciated by sister relief organizations. The hospital received many patients from hospital setups of US, Japan and other countries as referrals for investigations and management. The performance of the hospital has made it popular among the people of Bam, and has also been repeatedly appreciated by the Government.
