To mark the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi the Embassy of India in Tehran organized on October 3, 2010 a reception at the Embassy of India School in Tehran. Ambassador of India in Tehran His Excellency Sanjay Singh inaugurated the function which was attended by Ambassadors and diplomats of the Commonwealth countries in Tehran, representatives from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives from the Sports Federations in Tehran and members of the Indian community in Tehran. Ambassador Singh recalled that since the first commonwealth games held in Ontario of Canada in 1930, the world has changed significantly. He said that when India holds the 19th commonwealth games in New Delhi in 2010, India is the fastest growing democracy in the world. It has made significant progress in agriculture, food production, energy, healthcare, education and various fields of science and technology. It has also made its mark in the international arena in the fields of information technology, mass media and communication, space and even nuclear science. Today India is recognized as the innovation and manufacturing hub of the world. It has one of the most talented young populations in the world. Ambassador Singh expressed the hope that this commonwealth games would generate a wave in India which would inspire the children of India and young generation to take to sports and games with passion. He said that Shera the mascot would be a symbol of sportsman spirit for Indian children and the youth. Ambassador gave away prizes to the children who won prizes for the sports and cultural competitions held on the occasion. The reception was followed by a live telecast of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. Tehran 14 October 2010
